School HVAC Controls Upgrades in Southeast Michigan

Written by Jake Pence | Oct 12, 2026, 3:16:35 PM

Many school buildings in Southeast Michigan run HVAC on decades-old controls: pneumatic thermostats, schedules nobody can change, and classrooms that are too hot on one side of the hall and too cold on the other. Air Handlers Service Group has designed, installed and serviced commercial HVAC and building automation across Southeast Michigan since 1985. Here is how a controls upgrade can help.

Signs a school needs a controls upgrade

  • Constant hot and cold complaints from classrooms
  • Equipment runs on nights, weekends and summer break
  • Only one person knows how the system works
  • Replacement parts for the old system are hard to find
  • No way to see from the office whether a unit is running or has failed

What a controls upgrade can do

  • Schedules that match the school calendar. Full HVAC when students are in the building, setback when they are not.
  • Room-by-room control. VAV and VVT systems paired with current controls can even out classroom temperatures.
  • Alarms. Get alerted when a boiler, rooftop unit or exhaust fan fails, before the first bell.
  • Remote access. Check and adjust every building in a district from one screen.
  • Outside air control. Economizers and make-up air units can be set to bring in outside air as designed.

Plan around the school year

Summer break and longer holidays are the best time for controls work. Plan in winter and spring so equipment and programming are ready when buildings empty out.

Start with an assessment

A good upgrade starts with a walk-through: what equipment is in place, which controls are failing, and which buildings or wings have the most complaints. From there, work can be phased by building or budget year.
