In a restaurant, a refrigeration problem quickly becomes lost food, a failed inspection or lost sales. Air Handlers Service Group is based in Auburn Hills and has provided heating, air conditioning and refrigeration service across Southeast Michigan since 1985. Here is what Oakland County restaurant owners and managers should know.

## Signs your walk-in needs service

- Box temperature creeps up during busy service or after deliveries
- Ice builds up on the evaporator coil or around the door
- The compressor runs constantly or short-cycles
- Water pools on the floor inside or outside the box
- Door gaskets are torn or the door does not close on its own
- New noises from the condensing unit on the roof or out back

## Habits that prevent breakdowns

- Keep the condenser coil clean. Kitchen grease and cottonwood clog coils fast.
- Do not block evaporator fans with stacked product.
- Check and log box temperatures every shift.
- Replace worn door gaskets and strip curtains.
- Keep outdoor condensing units clear of snow and debris.

## Kitchen HVAC belongs on the same plan

Hoods pull a lot of air out of a kitchen. Make-up air units and exhaust fans have to bring that air back, or doors get hard to open, hoods stop drawing well and the dining room gets uncomfortable. Rooftop units over the dining room also work harder in summer.

## What a maintenance visit should cover

- Condenser and evaporator coil cleaning
- Refrigerant and compressor checks
- Defrost system and drain line checks
- Door, gasket and heater checks
- Make-up air, exhaust fan and rooftop unit service
