Here is what to do when a walk-in fails and how to keep it from happening.

## First steps when a walk-in goes warm

1. **Check the basics.** Is the breaker on, the door fully closed and the thermostat set correctly?
2. **Look at the evaporator.** A coil packed with ice means air cannot move. Note it for the technician.
3. **Check the condensing unit.** Is it running? Is the coil blocked by snow, leaves or debris?
4. **Protect product.** Keep the door closed and move the most sensitive items to another cooler if you can.
5. **Call for service.** Have the box temperature, what you have seen, and the unit's make and model ready.

## Common causes of walk-in failures

- Dirty condenser coils
- Failed evaporator or condenser fan motors
- Defrost timer, heater or drain problems
- Refrigerant leaks
- Worn door gaskets and closers
- Compressor or electrical failures

## How maintenance prevents emergencies

Most of these causes show warning signs weeks before a failure. Regular maintenance visits should include:

- Cleaning condenser and evaporator coils
- Checking fan motors, defrost and drains
- Checking refrigerant and compressor operation
- Inspecting doors, gaskets and heaters
